YANKEES RUMORED 103 MPH TRADE TARGET HUNTER GREENE BREAKS SILENCE ON ELBOW

Throughout the offseason, Cincinnati Reds flamethrowing righty Hunter Greene found his name at the center of trade rumors and speculation, with the New York Yankees at or near the top of the destination list. In fact, in October, former MLB general manager Jim Bowden named Greene as one of the “top 10 MLB stars most likely to be traded this offseason.”

While several of the names on Bowden’s list were, in fact, traded — and others still could be — the Reds’ 26-year-old ace is now almost certainly off the table. According to reporting by Charlie Goldsmith of WXIX-TV in Cincinnati, Greene is headed for an MRI exam to learn the extent of an elbow issue that has caused him “discomfort” since late last season.

On Wednesday, Greene spoke to local reporters about his elbow issue, saying, “Hopefully this is quick. I still have to check with the doctors,” according to Goldsmith.

According to Greene’s own statements, however, he has experienced no damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, which when torn leads to Tommy John surgery.

“It’s completely clean,” Greene said, as quoted by Goldsmith. “I just got stuff floated around. I’ve got to see how we’re going to manage that.”

The Reds’ first-round draft pick in 2017, when he was selected No. 2 overall, told reporters that he had been experiencing “discomfort” in the elbow down the stretch last year.

“I had this toward the end of the season last year in my final five or six starts,” Greene said, per Goldsmith. “I had elbow discomfort. It was a playoff push, so I pushed through it. I felt fine in the offseason. I got an injection. About a week before spring training started, the discomfort came back.”

The Reds’ starter, whose fastball has reached 103 mph, told Goldsmith that he was aware that he had “bone spurs” in his right elbow.

“Hopefully it’s just that and we get that taken care of and I can get back out there,” Greene said in his meeting with reporters, per Goldsmith.

Greene has thrown just one inning in spring training so far, and it was an ugly one, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk with no strikeouts.
