MEIKO SATOMURA IS GETTING A WWE WOMEN’S TITLE SHOT

Word is that Meiko Satomura will be announcing her retirement soon. Even if you only know her from the last few years in WWE — which featured a Mae Young Classic semi-final run and a dominant reign as NXT UK Women’s champion — you know that the 44 year old is a major figure in the history of Japanese women’s wrestling (aka joshi).

Satomura hasn’t had much of an on-screen or in-ring presence of late, but she is taking part in WWE’s return trip to Japan this week. On the first two stops on the tour, Meiko teamed with Bayley, Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill and picked up two wins over IYO SKY, Kairi Sane, Dakota Kai & Tiffany Stratton.

But for the final show of WWE’s quick visit to her home country, Satomura wants to make a statement. After their match today (July 26), she challenged Bayley to a match for her WWE Women’s title. The Role Model respectfully accepted, but the veteran made it clear she doesn’t want Bayley taking it easy on her.

The champ re-posted WWE’s video, along with some praise for her challenger:

Tomorrow night will be an absolute honor.

Feels like I’m having a WrestleMania match 1 week before SummerSlam.

Nobody’s expecting to see the belt change hands in Sumo Hall on Saturday, but this is still a cool moment as Satomura wraps up a noteworthy 30 year career.
