NEW ORLEANS PULLS STUNNER, SELECTS LOUISVILLE QB SHOUGH IN 2ND ROUND OF NFL DRAFT

NEW ORLEANS (WDAM) - The New Orleans Saints got themselves a quarterback Friday evening early in the second round the 2025 National Football League Draft.

The selection likely was not who many expected.

New Orleans took University of Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the eighth pick of the second round and 40th overall pick of the draft.

The Saints later took University of Texas defensive tackle Vernon Broughton with their first of two, third-round selections.

New Orleans wrapped up the second day of the draft by taking University of Virginia safety Jonas Sanker.

The draft’s final four rounds, the fourth through the seventh, can be seen from 11 a.m. to 6 p./m. Saturday on WDAM-ABC.

A quarterback became more of a priority for New Orleans in the draft with starter Derek Carr’s availability for the 2025 season still unsettled because of injury.

Shough became the third quarterback taken in the draft, and the second of two quarterbacks taken ahead of the much-more considered Shedeur Sanders of the University of Colorado.

The third quarterback among the top 40 players selected through early Friday was the foregone conclusion selected at the top of the draft by the Tennessee Titans, No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward out of the University of Miami.

The Saints opened the draft by taking Broughton’s teammate, University of Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., with the ninth overall pick in Thursday night’s opening round.

By tapping Banks, the Saints used a first-round pick on an offensive lineman for the seventh time since 2015.
