  • 6:10: Switzerland vs. Italy. Winner plays Finland.

  • 3:10: Sweden vs Latvia. Winner plays USA.

USA 5, Germany 1

USA men's hockey put an exclamation point on a successful preliminary round with a third consecutive victory.

The Germans never really gave USA much of a battle, despite having one of the best players in the world in the lineup in Leon Draisaitl. Matthew Tkachuk chirped the German captain and member of the Edmonton Oilers during the game, saying, "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." The two have a rivalry dating to Tkachuk's days with the Calgary Flames, heightened as Tkachuk, now with the Florida Panthers, has twice beaten Draisaitl's Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final.

Zach Werenski put the Americans on the board with 8.7 seconds left, picking a corner of Germany's net with a shot from the right circle off a pass from Auston Matthews.

The Americans converted during a power play early in the second period. Matthews was in front of the crease, in position to poke in a shot to make it 2-0. Brock Faber added to the score with a shot from along the boards near the midpoint of the game.

Tage Thompson's shot from the blue line put USA up 4-0 early in the third period, with Dylan Larkin picking up an assist. Jake Sanderson took a shot that Matthews redirected just outside the crease, giving him two goals and an assist on the night.

Tim Stützle ruined Hellebuyck's bid for a shutout with a goal midway through the third period.

Denmark 4, Latvia 2

The Danes scored three times in the first period of their game against Latvia and Nick Olesen's second goal of the night secured a much-needed victory for Denmark after two losses in preliminary action.

The Danes had played well against Germany in the first game, but were unable to score, and fell to USA in the second game. Frederik Andersen made 33 saves against the Latvians.

Canada 10, France 2

The Canadians, in an effort to lock up the top seed in the tournament, ran up the score on massive underdog France.

The 10-2 victory put Canada at nine points and a plus-17 goal differential after finishing the preliminary round 3-0.

"I thought they were physical games.I thought, you know, if you look at just the intensity and the speed, it's high," Sidney Crosby said. "I thought we responded the right way.  There's still areas we want to clean up, but, I mean, every game is so important. It's a short-term event, and you've got to make sure you get wins. You've got to make sure you get better with every game."

The game was chippy in the third period, with France's Pierre Credon mixing it up with Canada's Tom Wilson.

Switzerland 4, Czechia 3 (overtime)

The Swiss finished second in Group A standings with the 2026 Winter Olympic’s men’s hockey tournament first foray into overtime. Dean Kukan scored 1:49 into overtime on a 2-on-1, firing the puck up and over the right shoulder of Czechia netminder Lukas Dostal.

"It was important to get the second seeding, to get the win," Kukan said. "It was nice."

The Swiss awaited the outcome of the other matches on the last day of round-robin action to find out where they would be seeded going into the qualifying matches on Tuesday.

Filip Chlapik put the Czechs on the scoreboard at at 15:19 of the first period, but Roman Josi and Timo Meier put the Swiss in the lead in the second period. The Swiss were without one of their top players, Kevin Fiala, who suffered a lower-body injury in a game against Canada.

"It’s a huge loss for us, he’s probably our best player," Kukan said. "But now everyone is giving just a little bit more, just for him. I think today showed that, it was our best game and hopefully we continue like that."

Radim Simek and Pius Suter traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the third period. Martin Necas pushed the game past regulation with a goal with less than three minutes to play.
