IPL 2023 is done and dusted, as the world's best players in the Twenty20 format reflect on a thrilling final that saw Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni take their place in the record books.

We have seen some thrilling action this year, and the action built towards a sensational climax at the Narendra Modi Stadium, as CSK claimed the win by five wickets (via DLS method) after a rain-interrupted final that had already been rescheduled to the reserve day on Monday due to the weather.

That brought the curtain down on another scintillating season, and now thoughts have already turned to next year.

Here, we give you the key details about the 2024 IPL campaign and when all the action will take place.

When is the IPL 2024 auction?

Currently, the IPL 2024 auction doesn't have an official date but we can use previous seasons as a guide.

The IPL 2023 auction was held on December 16, 2022 in Bangalore - a little over three months before the competition was set to begin.

So we can expect the IPL 2024 auction to be held at the back end of 2023.

When is the IPL 2024 season?

No official dates have been confirmed for the IPL 2024 season, with the schedule for IPL 2023 only released in February before the March 31 opening match.

But it can be expected to begin at the back end of March 2024 and run for about two months.

How much money did each team get at the IPL 2023 auction?

Each franchise in the IPL gets a budget of Rs 80 Crore to assemble the best team that they see fit from all over the world, comprising capped and uncapped Indian players along with overseas players).

Teams do not need to use the entirety of their Rs 80 Crore but rules stipulate that at least 75% (Rs 60 Crore) must be allocated to players.

Franchises can spend 30-40% of their budget on the top five players.

What are the different categories of player in the IPL auctions in 2023?

Capped Players

Indian players who have represented the country's senior team in any format at least once.

Uncapped players

Indian domestic players who have never represented their country at senior level.

Non-Indian/Foreign/Overseas players

These players can fall under a capped, uncapped or an associate cricket nation from neighbouring countries.

It doesn't really matter where players fall under and which category.

However, an IPL squad can only hold a maximum of eight foreign players, with just four being allowed to field at one time.

How many players are listed in the 2023 auction?

There is no limit on the amount of players listed at an IPL auction, with the number differing most years.

The amount of players listed is dependent on who signs up, provided the players have been approved by their respective countries/boards.

In 2018 there was 578 players up for grabs, according to Bleacher Report.

The following year the number dropped to 346.

What are the player retention policies in the IPL 2023?

Each franchise is able to hold onto up to five players as a part of the pre-auction retention process in combination with the 'right-to-match' (RTM) policy.

Teams can only retain up to three Indian capped players, up to two overseas and uncapped Indian players.

RTM is an option teams can use to ensure a player is retained if a rival matches their bid.
